Intro to Handguns

This handgun course provides an excellent overview to the world of firearms. This course is great for individuals who are new to handguns, just want a refresher, or desire an understanding of the fundamentals and want to develop their skills in a fun and safe environment. Our certified instructors will cover safe weapons handling procedures, general handgun knowledge, the fundamentals of marksmanship, as well as the proper care and storage of firearms. This class will deliver a solid foundation to build upon and give beginners the skills they need to become responsible, confident shooters.

Concealed Carry Weapons Course

The Concealed Carry Weapons course is designed to satisfy the requirements to obtain a state of Illinois Concealed Carry permit. Your training will encompass both classroom and live fire training. Our instructors also provide you with a complete overview of the basics of managing unknown contact, basic shooting skills, situational awareness, and equipment/clothing considerations as well as justifiable use of force. Students will be required to pass a practical shooting test involving 30 rounds, 10 rounds at 5 yards and at 7 yards, and 10 rounds at 10 yards. You must achieve a 70% in the scoring area of the target. You will have two chances to qualify. There is no shooting training or practice involved, just the qualification. The course is a total of 16 hours over two days or over four evenings.

  • FOID card and have a good understanding of the safe use of a hand gun

WIG-OUT - Women's Intro to Guns Outing

Details: Top Shot Academy has teamed up with Fox Valley Shooting Range to  provide an opportunity to learn about firearms without all the macho baggage your husband, boyfriend or brothers bring with them. We know you love them, but sometimes it’s more comfortable taking your first shots with the girls. In this class you’ll learn about firearm safety, storage and basic nomenclature. We’ll start you off with an extremely low recoil .22 caliber pistol, and work up at your own pace. By the end of the day you might just know more, and be a better shot than your husband or boyfriend. No former experience required, ammunition and firearms are provided for this class.

This 3 hour class will cover:

  • Basics of firearm safety.
  • Safe storage of firearms.
  • Selecting a firearm that fits your needs and your hands
  • Basic principles of marksmanship
  • Stance, Grip, Sight Alignment, Sight Picture, Trigger Control

Intro to Competitive Shooting

Full Course Description:

This is a great class if you’re interested in competition shooting, or if you’re new to concealed carry and want to have real world skills for defensive guns use.

You’ll get tons of trigger time in our SIRT/BladeTech DryFire Zone. We start you off with our SIRT (Shot Indicating Resetting Trigger) laser pistols and BladeTech competition holsters. We’ll send you home with not only the skills needed to safely compete, but also safe holster and dry-fire  practice drills that you can do at home to maintain and enhance your self defense skills. The best part of the class is the follow up when you’re actually on the range shooting your first competition.

This 4 hour class (plus one evening of actual competition a $30.00 value) and will cover:

•Equipment selection and choosing a USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) division for competition.

•Basics of range safety.

•Target scoring.

•Safely drawing from a holster.

•Safe and efficient magazine changes.

•Marksmanship skills for competition shooting.

•Moving and shooting.

•Engaging multiple targets

•Breaking down a course of fire.

•DryFire practice

On the week after your classroom training, you’ll be invited to shoot your first competition at Fox Valley Shooting Range, under the guidance of your instructors.

Students will provide their own safe firearm (appropriate for competition) and safe holster for their model pistol, as well as a 3 to 5 extra magazines and mag pouches. All students may use our equipment in class free of charge and rent one of our complete rigs for range use in competition for $50.00 (please let us know when registering for the class if you will need to use our equipment) . If you’re not sure what you need, check with the pro staff at Fox Valley Shooting Range. We can get you everything you need for the class and for competition. No firearms ammunition needed for the classroom portion, but for the range portion we suggest 100 to 200 rounds of ammunition. We ask that you purchase ammo at the range. Due to safety concerns and competition rules, shoulder holsters, inside the waistband, and small of the back holsters will not be permitted.

Defensive Pistol #1

This class will qualify you to draw from holster, when shooting by yourself on the private lanes or on special times under supervision.

Project Safe Child - FREE

Project Safe Child is a free, one-hour course for both parents/guardians and their children. This class will not only bring this important conversation to the table, but give every household simple and practical tools in keeping children safe.

Youth Introduction to Handguns

This three hour youth class will teach students (ages 8-14) how to respect, safely handle and shoot a gun. The classroom portion will cover the four safety rules of handling a gun, the mechanics of semi-automatic pistols and the fundamentals of shooting (stance, grip, sighting, and trigger control) with training guns – all in a safe, controlled environment. The range portion will give students the opportunity to practice those skills, and build their confidence, with live fire shooting, using .22 caliber pistols.  This class is a great way to introduce your children to firearms.

Advanced Youth Handgun Class

This class will pick up where the Youth Intro to Handguns left off. There will be a review of safe gun handling and range safety. This class will involve more range time than the Youth Introduction to Handguns class since we will be working on actual shooting skills. We will also attempt to determine eye dominance. The class runs approximately 1 ½ – 2 hours. We will be using the .22 caliber pistol. The class is limited to eight students.Range fee, use of handgun and ammunition included.  The cost is $75.00 per student.

Top Teen Rifle

Top Teen Rifle is an introductory course for teenagers interested in firearm safety and the shooting sports. This class is for young adults ages 13-19. This introductory class will cover firearm safety, safe handling, and safe storage. We will discuss the importance of maintaining confidentiality of firearm ownership and family firearms.  We will provide the  foundation for proper rifle marksmanship.  The classroom portion will include firearms nomenclature as well as safe operation. We will have a rifle with a SIRT (Shot Indicating Resetting Trigger) bolt installed for dry-fire practice in class. When we get to the range, students will have an opportunity to shoot various .22 caliber rifle, beginning with a bolt-action and moving into semi-automatic rifles.

Home Defense- request by appointment

In Home Defense training you will learn a variety of techniques necessary to safely operate in a defensive situation inside the home. These skills will include shooting on the move techniques, low light shooting, malfunction clearing, and other essential skills. After this class, you will have the knowledge to create a safe plan for your home and how to remain focused on your surroundings when out in public.  The class costs $60.00 per person with a $20.00 nonrefundable deposit.  If fewer than 10 people register we reserve the right to cancel the class.  If this occurs, all will receive a full refund or be placed in the next scheduled class.

NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course - request by appointment

This eight hour handgun course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.

Prerequisite(s):

  •  Law-abiding adult citizen as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law
  • Experienced shooter (shooter must be able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm). Prospective participants can demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes by producing an NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.

Cowboy Action Shooting

Cowboy Action Shooting is an adventurous shooting sport in which contestants of all ages compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West: single action revolvers, lever action rifles, side-by-side, double-barreled, pre-1900 pump or lever action shotguns. The shooting competition is staged in a unique, “Old West” style and costuming.

COST: $50 – Which includes:

Private handgun session with one of our professional firearms instructors is available now. We have a proven method of helping our students become better pistol shooters. Whether you are a first time shooter looking to learn the basics or a seasoned shooter looking to hone your skills, private instruction is offered in increments of one hour.
